IN YOUR SOLITUDE
Emulsion Transferring & Hand Painting is a series that relies on the almost contradictory interaction between my artistic process and the final works. My process for this series includes painting onto my negatives a concentrate matte developing gel, similar to the gel used in polaroid photography. I then treat 100% cotton, high-fiber, acid-free printmaking paper with an alcohol solution and set the negative to the paper, allowing the gel to transfer the image. Once the image is set and dried, I paint over the photograph with acrylic and watercolor paints and then texturize the image with salt and vinegar.
The result is a collection of images that exist eerily within their own fantastical world, welcoming the viewer into a strange but oddly familiar dreamscape. The series establish a complex conversation between the physically demanding process of creating the works and the airy mysticism of the world that I depict. The series was inspired by the Pablo Neruda poem “Alberto Rojas Jimenez Comes Flying.” It depicts a realm of eternal existence, shadowing our own and speaking to the dark mysteries of our imaginations.
