STONE IS NOT STONE
Stone Is Not Stone wrote the American author Carson McCullers. The stuff of a woman’s daily life, once considered monolithic, can appear altered under her perception of the force of changing emotion.
This series arises from a time of inertia and isolation, when a woman – traditionally tethered to domesticity and subject to its rituals – finds herself further quieted and stifled under lockdown. Yet, when photographed, she is in motion despite her air of waiting. She inhabits an in-between space: that liminal overlap where her situation in life confronts her dreams and fears. The familiar trappings of her homebound womanhood are recast in the light of her internal experience, illuminating the contours of her emotional landscape. These images are created with emulsion transferring and hand painting, resulting in a tactile object that emphasizes the importance – above rationalizing and understanding – of sensing and feeling.

Stone Is Not Stone
There was a time when stone was stone
And a face on the street was a finished face.
Between the Thing, myself and God alone
There was an instant symmetry.
Since you have altered all my world this trinity is twisted:
Stone is not stone
And faces like the fractioned characters in dreams are incomplete
Until in the child’s inchoate face
I recognize your exiled eyes.
The soldier climbs the glaring stair leaving your shadow.
Tonight, this torn room sleeps
Beneath the starlight bent by you.
